Bappa Mukherjee obtained his M.Sc. (Tech) and PhD in Applied Geophysics from IIT (ISM), Dhanbad. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at several institutes of national importance, such as Gas Hydrate Group of the CSIR National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad; Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, IIT Kharagpur; and Seismic Interpretation Laboratory, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun. Currently, he is working as a Scientist in Subsurface Geophysics and Geodynamics group at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (An Autonomous Institute of DST, GoI), Dehradun.
He is working on the application of AI/ML, Mathematical tools and transforms, and mono- and multifractal-based approaches for subsurface feature delineation, resource estimation, etc., in the context of reservoir characterisation using seismic and well-log data. He also has expertise in GPS and gravity data analysis and interpretation. He has published ~35 papers in SCI journals, holds two international patents (in United Kingdom), leads major GoI-sponsored (ANRF) projects as PI and serves as an editorial board member of reputed international journals.
Research in applied geophysics, seismic and well-log interpretation, AI/ML and deep learning applications in geosciences, geophysical signal processing, fractal and multifractal analysis, petrophysics, reservoir characterization, gas-hydrate exploration, seismic data recovery, earthquake studies, and subsurface geological modelling. Active in research project leadership, scientific publications, patents, PhD supervision, invited lectures, workshops, editorial activities, and national/international scientific conferences.
