Energy storage systems (ESS) are essential for enhancing power system stability, efficiency, and sustainability. When it comes to incorporating alternative sources, they are essential, mitigating fluctuations and improving grid resilience. This review comprehensively analyzes energy preservation technologies, encompassing electric, electrolytic, arbitrary, thermal processing, and chemical storage systems. Each technology is evaluated based on capacity, lifespan, cost, efficiency, and suitability for different applications. The study also explores hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), which associate multiple technologies to enhance performance and reliability. ESS applications span various sectors, including grid and utility-scale storage, industrial operations, transportation, residential and commercial use, and military and aerospace applications. While lithium-ion batteries control the ESS landscape, advancements in solid-state batteries, hydrogen storage, and supercapacitors are shaping the future of energy storage. The review also highlights key challenges such as high costs, material limitations, and energy losses, along with potential solutions and emerging trends. With the growing demand for clean energy and smart grid solutions, innovations in energy storage technologies are expected to drive sustainability and energy security. This analysis serves as a significant resource for scientists, engineers, and politicians trying to maximize energy storage systems for a greener future.
